Theatre is an essential art form, but for companies like Direct Theatre Collective, survival is anything but guaranteed. Producing new, original work—especially work that challenges the status quo, amplifies marginalized voices, and sparks difficult but necessary conversations—is a bold and risky endeavor. In a world where theatre companies often rely on familiar productions to draw in crowds, DTC dares to push boundaries and create art that provokes real change. But doing this vital work comes with its challenges. Funding for original, transformative theatre is hard to come by, and the road is steep for independent companies like ours. That’s why we rely on the support of people who believe in the power of theatre to evoke and provoke socio-political change, which is exactly what DTC has been doing since it's inception in 2018.

We are dedicated to producing bold, original works that inspire reflection and action. From our debut production HYSTERIA, which won multiple awards and deeply resonated with audiences, to our film-theatre-documentary hybrid Where Women Gather, which was selected to be screened at the Women Deliver International Conference in Kigali, Rwanda, our work has a undoubted global reach and acclaim. Yet, we remain deeply rooted in our local community, employing local artists and investing in the development of groundbreaking new works like Monster, the original musical, based on the life of Medusa - which is in many ways our most ambitious and financially challenging project to date.
